New here

but not to diabetes or pumping. Been pumping for about 2 1/2 years, and will mark my 30th year of living with D this December!
I just wanted to say that I am glad I found this forum. I’ve been reading through some posts and it’s great to know that so many other people feel exactly the same way I do! Sometimes you feel very alone, you know?

I’m looking forward to chiming in every now and then!

Hi Di!!!

Welcome to our little corner of the world. I hope you will enjoy a long and wonderful stay.

I am a 34 year diabetic and a 5 year pumper. If I can help you out, please let me know.

hey there!
Welcome to TuD! It’s such a great community =) If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, someone will be able to answer you! There are such great caring people here!

30 years is a pretty long time! It hit me once the new year struck, and it’s been on my mind ever since! Well, I was diagnosed when I was 7. My parents didn’t know much about the disease, but, boy, they sure learned quickly. Back then, I wasn’t counting carbs or even testing my blood sugar. We pretty much relied on the urine testing. I was on one shot a day, then about 3 years after diagnosis I went up to 2. From my teen years on I was on the pre-mixed stuff ,reg and NPH…blech:( and was on that until I wised up, and got a new doctor almost 3 years ago. I had horrible lows, ridiculous highs, and had gained a ton of weight chasing my lows away over the years. I had had enough, and needed to do something about it.

The new doc put me on a pump (Minimed), and although it is still trail and error with the basals, I haven’t looked back since. I lost the weight, my a1c’s have been in the 6’s, and I feel better. It’s not easy, as you all know, but that comes with the territory, I guess. I really don’t know life without diabtetes, and as crazy as it sounds, I think I’m healthier because of it.

Thanks for listening! I have a feeling I’m going to like it here!!!

Get the Book Pumping Insulin by John Walsh. He has a very detailed and accurate method to determine basal rates. The book is a goldmine!

Thanks for the tip, Gerry. I have it, but it’s been on my shelf collecting dust for a while. Maybe it’s time for a re-read!

Will do! Once I actually get a picture of myself and figure out how to do it, it’ll be up. There’s a lot on the site I’m still sorting through!!
