I know, it's kind of passé to talk about New Year's resolutions. And I think any day of the year is a fine time to re-focus on goals/priorities. But still... Do you have any?
So far, mine are:
1. Engage Gary Scheiner's services to help me get a better handle on my blood sugar (which I know will require tracking my sugars, insulin, exercise.... yuck)
2. Learn to cook
3. Be more social on TuDiabetes!
4. Get better at planning things (doctor's appointments, work-related projects...) well in advance
Congrats on your commitment to some new goals. Of course, we can take on new goals at any time but the start of a new year makes us all aware of the passage of time. We're not getting any younger!
I went through a major reboot of my diabetes regimen when I had to face the hard reality of a diabetes complication. I made several changes to my diet, exercise, and general overall study of all things diabetes. Those changes made a dramatic effect on my BG control, energy level, and sense of well-being.
All I can say is that making the commitment and toughing it out any of the sure-to-come challenges is well worth it in the long run. It took the threat of a downturn in my health to grab my attention and give me the persistence to stick with many new habits. I only wished I had started a few years before.
By the way, Gary Scheiner helped me (summer 2012) a great deal in getting my basal rates set with the big changes I started with my diet. My basal rate game is much better since then.
Good luck with your fresh slate! I look forward to seeing more of your comments here. I've really enjoyed the Thrusday videos that you host!
I am a real stick in the mud. My New Year's resolutions are always attainable (I do not need additional stress with T1.) This year it is to use my turn signal at every corner and lane change.
Oh, and if you want to learn to cook, get in touch.
And I have a great spread sheet for logging....
Happy and Healthy New Year Emily. Thanks for all you do here.
One resolution for me is to have no more bad, unresponsive lows if possible and the other is to de-stress myself overall. I also would like to try some different exercises and I hope this won't make me have more lows or get too achy.
Good for you for getting help with Gary, being more social and learning to cook, cooking is lots of fun, wish I had more time for it to do more different recipes.
My Mom posted a funny cartoon on FB, it said " I am opening a gym called "Resolutions" for the first 2 weeks it will have gym equipment and classes, after that it becomes a bar. That is pretty much my take on New Years Resolutions. At the same time I like your plan. I have really enjoyed Gary Scheiner's presentations here on video chat and his Think Like a Pancreas is a dog eared book in my kindle (you can't really dog ear the kindle but I do refer back to the book often :). If you need any help with learning to cook, my kitchen is open and I have found a bunch of really good recipes. You know we're pretty much always in the chat room so being social here is easy. As to planning ? I am compulsively on time or early for everything - not sure where that came from ? But I'm sure if you put your mind to it anything is possible. Good luck with your resolutions.
I entered the New Year as a gym rat: joined a new gym in mid-December. Much nicer than my old (& free) gym. I'm working out for longer duration & more consistently. My jeans feel looser already. I'm eating more healthfully & my blood sugars have improved! Yes, I have a goal of losing 10 lbs by May. Yes, I want my A1C to improve. But right now, it's pretty easy to just enjoy the treat of using this great facility. I think my goals will just happen as a result.
P90X3, which will also involve no booze (eek), eating cleanly ("foods with one ingredient" is a target, like BG, I dunno if I'll it it all the time but I'm more likely to hit it if I think about it?) *and* more calories AND carbs, probably in the 180-200 range. I've experimented w/ eating fruit this week. I've never been much of a fruit eater but I've been pleasantly surprised at getting it into my diet, which makes my macronutrients fall into place (reducing fat w/ carbs that aren't bread/potato/rice/etc. carbs...) and I'm feeling pretty good. I just bolused for 26G for a midmorning pear before I go to the grocery store...
Here are my three resolutions this year. They are my very serious and oh i so hope to get there this year:
1. Only do things I am can have fun at.
2. Laugh so much more. I am thinking by a factor of say 1.3? 1.6 in church.
3. Tell more jokes in church. I have no idea if you know this but I feel certain God, whoever she may be has a terrific sense of humor. I want to honor her wish to have a great laugh.
P90X3... very ambitious! I tried some P90X videos last year and could not believe how hard they were. They say "just do as many reps as you can, and that number will increase over time", but what if you can't do any reps? Will that increase just from watching the video with a pained look on my face? :)
I dunno about the look. They have "modifiers" (e.g. pushups on knees, using bands instead of chinups, that will work similar muscle groups...) but the videos are kind of bam bam bam and, if you're grooving in it, you can't always see what the modifier is doing. I can barely keep up but it is **extremely** exhilarating. X3 is also only 30 minutes!
I did T25 last summer (similar but w/ Shaun T, who I like a ton! And only 25 minutes!), along with running and had a pretty good summer running however after the 1/2 marathon in November, I didn't run again until Thanksgiving, just did T25 to work out and ran a PR in a "Turkey Trot", ***finally*** breaking the 23 minute "barrier" (22:59, Ha!) so I think it's pretty good exercise and, given how ghastly the weather has been this winter, I'm sort of demotivated to go outside. The only part I'll miss is the cameraderie w/ my running buddies but, since they're going every week, I'll try to catch them later...
