Of Blogs and Blood Glucose

Ever have a stubborn BG day? You know those days…the ones where you wake up at 88 and it all goes downhill from there? The ones where you test an hour later on and you are 153 (Did someone say dawn phenomenon??)? You eat breakfast (same exact one you had yesterday) and take your dose plus a correction. Then you test a few hours later and you are in the 220’s. Hmm, yesterday at this time, you were 114. So you correct again, and an hour later it’s 165, so you think, "it’s going down…time for lunch (after all you only have 20 minutes to eat before your class comes back from recess!). So you bolus and eat your measly sandwich with 30g of carbs, and go back to work. 3 hours later you test again and you are at 198. Kind of high, no? So you correct again and think, “Well, I’m exercising when I get home so that should bring it down.” Except that today, of course, it actually goes up to 202 during the workout. And stays there. Well, you figure it must be the pump infusion set (maybe there was an air bubble in your pump tubing that you missed), so you change the set. And it starts going down. 165 before dinner (still high in your book, but at least you are not in the 200’s anymore). You eat, test an hour later at 190. OK, maybe it will go down. 2 hours later it’s gone down, but to 180. And you are starving. So you choose not to eat and write a blog post instead. You’ve also got a higher temp basal rate going on now, as you realize that you are probably hormonal and thus, insulin resistant. And you feel like kicking yourself for thinking, just yesterday, “Wow, my #'s have been great all day!!! I could be on one of those glucose meter commercials with these #'s!!” Not today. Today you are the equivalent of a blood sugar fashion DON’T. Sound familiar? No? Maybe it’s just me.

On the bright side, I got my latest a1c results and they are 6.7. Same as last time. Didn’t drop below 6.5 the way I had hoped, but at least it didn’t go up.

I hate those days… it seems no matter what you do is wrong! These are good days to just sit on the couch in comfy clothes and forget about everything and just sleep or read a book or relax. 6.7 is a great A1C! Congrats!

I have days like those too! Is it possible that your insulin is bad? When this happens, I usually force myself to change everything!

You just described yesterday! I always blame those days on the “site” and change it. But that doesn’t alway work. Like Kristin said, when my insulin vial gets close to the bottom, i begin to suspect the potency of the insulin. So many factors can affect our blood sugars that when I’ve ruled out the obvious, I just quit trying to over analyze it. My A1Cs come back under 7 so I’m a happy camper. For every bad day, I have another where I don’t go above 130 all day.

Me too - that’s what my yesterday was like. I call these UNMIDs (unexplained need more insulin more days). I think it’s just part of the disease, and I just deal with it as they are few thank goodness. I love the idea of “Today you are the equivalent of a blood sugar fashion DON’T” - that’s a good one! It’s not just you, and thanks much for shaing this!

Days like that make me insane! And I’ve had some near exactly like the one you just described, including the particular ending conclusion of hormones!

Stupid diabetes. Hope today was a better day!

So glad I’m not alone. And yes, today was better (except for the unexpected meal out which always throws me off…I am terrible at estimating carbs).

Thanks for the support everyone!

Wow! I thought it was just me that had days like that! I asked my endo about days like this and they just rolled their eyes at me and acted if it was just ME! Thanks for sharing!!

Have the same thing every couple of weeks & one recently. My head started throbbing, tested & was at 220. Yep, no apparent reason. Not ill, not hormonal, hadn’t even eaten anything, insulin vial fairly new, & I don’t have a pump to blame it on:) Kept correcting with small doses afraid to overdo it & crash, but nothing worked. I just kept drinking water & running up & down the stairs. Stayed up way too late waiting to get to a decent number.

Gerri, are you living my life, or did the diabetes police tell you about my day last week… and just when I was trying to impress my DE before my pump-start in May. Totally no explanation for it. The whole day went like that, and I do low carb and am old enough not to worry about hormones (which can sometimes be the cause).

Hi Susi,

I think I am! I do low carb, too. I’ve told the diabetes police to stay away from my house:) Some days are so screwy. I try not to let it get to me, but am not successful at letting it just roll off.

You are soooo me!!!
