Refresh my flagging memory

I’ve never been a Tandem user but have followed the many discussions here about BIQ and CIQ systems. Google or AI has not revealed the answer to my question.

I know that BIQ is also known as Basal IQ and that CIQ is Control IQ. What the heck does IQ decode as?!

Does it perhaps mean intelligence quotient, the score on a standardized test that purports to measure human intelligence?

Some people do the daily crossword puzzle, I investigate language quirks like acronyms! Google or AI did not scratch my itch so I enlisted your help.

My guess is you’re overthinking. It just means that there’s an algorithm that does stuff which is a kind of “intelligence” and the marketing department figured IQ conveyed that which I think it does.

Yeah, I never really understood the marketing mindset. I identify more with the engineers!

It stands for Insulin Query. In computer programming, queries are essentially commands given to a computer program or a database system to retrieve or modify specific pieces of data . A query can be thought of as a request for information from a database.

Both CiQ and BiQ are querying algorithms that require to query the dexcom in order to change the algorithm to deliver the correct insulin dose.

So it’s a programming thing. Has no meaning to anyone outside that world

@Timothy – Wow! That’s the first time I’ve heard that explanation but it makes logical sense. It may have no meaning beyond the programming world but there are people like me who are inquisitive about language.

A company like Tandem puts a decent amount of time and creativity in naming such a central facet of their business. As consumers subject to their marketing, we deserve to know. It’s not centrally important to us (like pump software that won’t update!) but does deserve at least on obvious footnote on their website. I would argue that it should be easily discoverable with a reasonable internet search.

Thanks for the enlightening comment. By the way, since I never heard of that explanation before, it’s a fact that my memory, at least in this instance, did not fail!

Not sure if it changed, but Control IQ was initially developed from the TypeZero algorithm which is now owned by Dexcom. Dexcom and Tandemn don’t talk about it much, not sure what type of business arrangement they have. Below is the most current reference I could find.
