A few weeks back I started with my allergy symptoms that spiraled into a gnarly sinus infection. I avoided the sinus cocktail shot and the physicians office because they tend to hurl steroids at my that throw my blood glucose into a tizzy. My insulin resistance has been bananas around midday, to the point where I barely want to eat carbs at lunch. While my symptoms have finally subsided, the elevated blood glucose has not. Can there be some lag time and maybe the infection hadn’t fully run its course or should I just bite the bullet and go to the doctor? I just want my normal insulin regimen back
If it is already sinusitis, the infection needs antibiotics. Not steroids. I have had sinus problems all my life. When problems arise, I use one Sudaphed PE ( little red pill ) and one Guaifenesin ( blue and white pill ) and drink plenty of iced tea. The liquid help flush everything down after the pills have loosened it.
Again, if it is already a sinus infection, the Sudaphed PE and the Mucinex won’t work.
I’ve had a few sinus infections and they did finally resolve after a course of antibiotics. My symptoms included high BGs, 200-300 mg/dL (11.1-16.7 mmol/L) that resisted insulin corrections. One episode required a second course of antibiotics as the infection relapsed.
With what you describe, if it were me, I would go back to the doctor. I don’t understand, however, why any doctor would treat a diabetic with steroids if other options were available. High blood glucose levels, amplified by steroids, makes it harder for the body to heal. I’m not a doctor so maybe I’m missing something here. Good luck and please let us know how things go.
When I get sinus infections doctor usually gives me antibiotics. Clears everything up within the week.
Could be some lag time on the immune reaction to the infection settling down, since if your body has succeeded in fighting it off, it’s been working hard at that and the resulting inflammation that has elevated your insulin resistance won’t necessarily instantly all go away. If you’re not sure the infection is gone though, I’d get it checked out. For sinus infections, I’d think steroids would be counterproductive anyway, since they suppress the immune system—you need, as mentioned above, an antibiotic. I usually get a z-pack, which does the trick nicely and with relatively minimal side effects, especially if I follow with probiotics (via yogurt or supplements), although I also make sure I get a diflucan prescription with any antibiotic, in case they cause a yeast infection (which the combo of high blood sugars and an antibiotic is a set-up for, since it kills the protective bacteria).
