Smith & Nephew recall - site irritation

I just did some checking and found that there has been a recall on some batches of Smith & Nephew Skin Prep and Uni-solve wipes (http://www.smithdrug.com/ddf/recalls/remove_wipes.pdf). Many dexcom and omnipod users have these items as part of the standard regimen. It could be pure co-incidence but for the first time in over a year, I’ve been getting extreme irritation at my omnipod sites - which is what prompted me to do the research in the first place. It turns out that the Skin Prep and Uni-Solve wipes I had been using were indeed subject to the recall for “contamination” concerns. I’m posting this for those of you who might have had recent, unexplained irritation at your omnipod sites. I’d be interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar problem.

As a side note, I was very unimpressed with Smith & Nephew’s response to my call. They refused to replace my products because the recall “is voluntary and not fda mandated”. However they also stated that I should dispose of the product and that were I to continue to use it it would be at my own risk! So I’m not supposed to use the product but they are not standing behind it…Thankfully ADW through whom I had ordered the product could not have been nicer and gladly refunded me the cost for the recalled products. Kudos to ADW and the reverse for Smith & Nephew.

Great! I ordered 2 boxes of the adhesive remover wipes with one of the recalled lot numbers off of Amazon about 1 month ago. And yes, I was wondering why all of a sudden my dtrs skin would have “chicken skin” type hives on the site I used the adhesive remover wipes when previously she had no issues…

Amazon might give you a refund just the way ADW did for me…just a thought. Is the irritated area raised and red, plus the skin drier than the surrounding skin? I’d never experienced this before. I’m guessing the wipes are not sterile the way they are supposed to be which is why I was surprised how nonchalant and unhelpuf the S&N people were when I called - you’d think the possibility of infection would be a big concern to them…

When the pod first comes off it is red, large bumpy, rash/hives where I used the wipe. Even on the surrounding area that was just fine. I wash the site immediately or she gets right in the bath and the hives go away but after the skin is more rough and red than the surrounding. I’ve been using vitamin e oil on the areas which has helped out a lot. Last night I took her pod off just peeling it and no problems with her skin under the pod. I may just cont to do that and if it is really sticky go back to the baby oil gel I used in the beginning. I probably shouldn’t be using these harsh chemical type wipes on my 5 yr old anyway. Thanks for the heads up though. Saves us from using about 75 more wipes with the same results ;~)

Thanks for the reply and best of luck with finding the right formula. I’ve found that the Uni-solve does a great job of getting rid of the sticky residue when removing the pod and I’m reluctant to abandon it so I’ve ordered some new boxes (but will check them against the recall list before i use them…).

I am now using new wipes and have thrown out all the recalled ones. My site irriation has improved markedly. I believe the contaminated Smith & Nephew wipes were what caused my problems. If you use these products it would be worth checking the recalled lot numbers to make sure you don’t have them in your supplies cabinet.

Thanks for posting this: ADW sent an email about the IV Prep Recall but not this one.

I have two boxes of the UNISOLVE in the recalled Lot # OM137 (located on top of box & imprinted on the bottom of each wipe package).

I think we are going to baby oil and cotton for removal which is what my CDE recommends. Not very portable though for a teenage boy and really messy.

I’ve just started peeling them off slowly on my 5 yr old pushing the skin away from the adhesive as I go (NOT pulling the adhesive away from the skin) and amazingly she does completely fine with it! Yes, the baby oil is messy but a good alternative to chemicals

My son had recently been changing his Pod after a shower in the am and then he does not really need the Uni-Solve. As long as the Pod is still wet, it seems to slide off easier.

Has anyone tried a product called Medi-Sol Adhesive Remover. It comes in 50ct wipes and a spray on liquid. The description says “These adhesive remover wipes contain natural oils, aloe vera, lanolin and organic wetting agents. Medi-Sol Skin Adhesive remover is a safe and effective adhesive remover, specially developed for medical application. It effectively removes tape, adhesives, nitro patches, tar residue from skin, hair and more. This product does not contain harsh solvents. It is safe, non-irritating and non-toxic, biodegradable with no artifical dyes, colors, or fragrance with a natural citrus aroma.” I found it on a natural foods type website.

The Skin-Tac makers also have their own Adhesive Remover in a wipe form but ADW only carried it by the case and it sounded “full chemical strength” in order to remove their sticky products. I just need a few wipes for my son to carry in case of occlusions. I wonder if baby oil comes in a wipe form ?
