Streamlining our registration questions: your thoughts

The Hometown question was always confusing – where do you live vs. hometown. To met they are two different things. I rather liked the occupation question because it told us a bit about each other. I always liked seeing CDEs and Endos joining.

I found that question confusing too, Donna, but in the opposite way. I’ve moved a lot and I left the New Jersey/New York area where I grew up for good 32 years ago. I think of myself as a Californian and when I lived in Guatemala it was very common to be asked where you’re from and my answer was always California. So I may be biased in this but I really don’t find where someone was originally from as important as where they’re located now. I also noticed that the place you live is located separately on the left and don’t recall if it is tied to a question on the profile questionnaire or another source.

Nell,
I agree with this 100%.

Trisha

Scott,

Name, and face / pic / 'betes type, would work nicely. I think 'betes type is most important, especially when the use of insulin, is in the conversations.

Trisha

Kelly,
I’ve been saying the same thing for many years now (ayk), so I’m 10,000% in agreement with this.
Trisha

Trish, not sure I understand why you say type is important when discussing the use of insulin? It’s late here, maybe I’m being dense

Jrtpup,

There are many Type 2’s that use insulin to control their numbers, and mostly in huge amounts, as in 100’s of units. That amount of insulin would kill most Type 1’s. Say, for instance, a Type 2 was giving advice to a new Type 1 that didn’t know any better, that could have disasterous results. However, the Type 2 may not know that the newbie is a Type 1 and vice versa. We old timer Type 1’s would know better, but not so much for newbie Type 1’s.

As it is, Type 1 and Type 2 are two totally different diseases, and while there may be somethings similar, the treatment is all together different.

You are not dense…it’s late for sure!

Trisha - IDDM (aka type 1) x almost 30 years

For what it’s worth I always liked the question about what you do for a living…it was interesting to see everyone’s occupation!

Also, I’m not a fan of the question about when you were diagnosed. I’d like to be able to just enter ‘July 1992’ but the page FORCES me to enter a date. I don’t know the date! I know I’m not the only person here at TuD who doesn’t know their diagnosis date. We shouldn’t be forced to enter a made up date, just so we can enter the correct month and year.

I like the acceptance and equality attitude! The more I read on here, the more I can see that it isn’t an either/or, but it’s a spectrum, with people falling in between, and people with other problems which affect their diabetes control, etc. And you’re right about putting it in context – we have to work from where each person is at, and questions from Metformin users, for example, need to be answered differently from those of insulin users. And I don’t want to put in a stupid answer which I know nothing about when I see a post! LOL!!

I agree with Kari on the date issue. I was young enough when I was diagnosed that I really don’t remember the date. I believe it’s April 1981, but have no idea when in April, so I just picked the 1st day of the month… as if it was a cruel April Fools’ joke.

Okay, folks. From your feedback in this discussion, the short survey we sent out recently, and our own examination of answers we get to the current registration questions, we've come up with this list! We like it, and we hope you like it, too. Let us know!

Here 'tis:

Today I noticed everyone’s type has disappeared. Apparently you need to go back and reenter it. Since most people don’t look at this part of their page very often, many won’t know its missing.

I am always looking at a persons type to put their posts in context. Being T2 lots of posts by T1s really have nothing useful for me, but now I have no way to filter these out.

On a positive note I do like #13) Tell us more about you, very convenient.

Badmoon, my Type was there - it is at the top.

I think Type 1 and Type 1.5 (LADA) need to be two separate categories.

p.s. The month and year of DX are helpful. I wouldn’t worry about the exact day.

Trisha

Badmoon,

My type has disappeared from my page also. Interesting that this hasn’t effected everyone. I’ll alert the other admins. Did you notice when this happened?

Kelly,

How did you manage to get yours at the top? Thanks.

Trisha

I didn’t touch anything Trisha - it was already there. I just mentioned where in case Badmoon was looking where it used to be.

Dang, mine has always been towards halfway or so to the bottom. Thanks!
