Summertime Battles

This is my 1st summer on insulin and so, of course, my 1st summer on an insulin pump. It has been interesting. I live in deep South Texas. Temperatures have been over 100 all summer and I work outside for sometimes 16 hours a day. When I started on the pod in March I began at 1.60 units per hour. This summer I have used as little as 0.05 units per hour and as many as 3.50 units per hour. This last pod, I started at 0.50 units per hour and am now up to 1.25 units per hour (24hrs). All of these changes have kept my bg’s in the 80’s and 90’s and have kept me on my toes. I cannot even count how many times I have poked my fingertips.
For you more experienced “Podders” and diabetics, is this normal for our summer diabetes control? Was thinking that maybe my insulin (mail order) was delivered too warm and now my newly delivered insulin is much more potent. I figure too that the insulin in the Pods I use just get hot after a day and therefore are not as potent.
On a lighter note, I have an appointment with an Endo at the local and new Joselin Diabetes Clinic. Sweet!! They can hopefully hook me up on CGM and we can figure this out with my new team.
Thanks in advance for your input, thoughts, and help.

Could just be your change in activity and the heat. I am in Dallas and it has been a struggle just to keep my pod on and the temp low on the pdm.

My son’s BG drops like a stone when he is active in the heat. Every body is different, but I would guess that is playing into your volatility.

I live in SW Ohio; went to the Skynerd concert [outdoor] over Labor Day which was an unusually hot day in Ohio, near 100. My blood sugar struggled to keep up and all I was doing was a little rockin and rollin. I nearly died trying to take the kids to Disneyworld and Busch Gardens years ago. I don’t know if heat is a major factor for all diabetics but it’s a major major factor for me!
