Popcorn does little to increase my BS levels. I usually take a correction bolus after eating it. It, for me, has been an effective snack.
Unless you are eating it, I would think cheeba is pretty low carb? I don't recall what Dr. Bernstein recommends about 420 though? I agree that the thing to do is when you put down one "works" get out your other one, see what your BG is and adjust accordingly. If your BG is low "uh oh, I'd better have a snack dude..." and if it's not, d/l "Dark Star" from "Live Dead" and put on some head phones and go for a walk for 20 minutes. Then come home and test again and, if it's cool, have a snack then. And, if your walk ends up taking 3 hours, well, bring a snack (and meter and insulin...) and do what's necessary to stay on top of your bg while you are elevated?
It usually drops like a .5 % tried it last night. So tested before 6.5 then 15 minutes after it was at 6.0 1 hour later 5.6 I have never had it go up or drop drastically. I think it's the best substitute if everybody is getting drunk and stupid at a party and we have we have to put up with all the drunk stupid people, but still stay in control.
This aspect of the DOC drives me insane. Can't believe the judgment people pit against people's lifestyle choices...
This was my biggest issue with weed. I found a few methods of reducing this:
1. VAPORIZE. I prefer to vaporize 99.9% of the time. Mostly because I do not want the negative health effects of inhaling burning plant matter. If you are a regular user and especially a diabetic user, invest in a vaporizer. They do not have to be incredibly expensive. The "Magic Flight Launch Box" is an awesome buy for $100-$130, with a full lifetime warranty on any and all parts. I find the high you get from a vape is more of a "body high" and somehow less munchie inducing.
2.HEALTHY SNACKS. When I have the munchies I find it is more of a need to just eat, period(kind of like an oral fixation thing), not really any food in particular (even though anything deep fried and covered in cheese and/or chocolate sounds awesome). I just don't keep a lot of unhealthy food in my house. I started tricking myself into craving generally low carb/healthy food when high, like carrot sticks, pickles, low fat cheese, etc. Even if you don't really want these types of foods in the moment, just try them while high and trust me the chemicals will take over and you will keep eating.
3.Chewing gum or no/low carb hard candies also helps (again the oral fixation thing)
4. Smoking before a scheduled meal time also helps, this way you get your food fix without going overboard.
Hope this helps! Enjoy!
I've been a daily user most of the last 20 years but stopped about 3 months ago. Now I just use it with friends probably once or twice a week. This was for nothing to do with diabetes but to address depression which I do believe marijuana provides an escape from - and maybe contributes to according to some studies but I'm not convinced of that.
I've always been lucky with not getting the munchies. In fact I prefer to eat before smoking as I don't enjoy eating too stoned. I'd do have "general" munchies though and find I can usually drink them away. Diet pop, tea, water, crystal light - all these help give me something to do without eating. Gum also helps. If I do need to eat something I might munch on a few carrots which can be easily weighed and bolused for.
Truly interesting topic. I don't have much to offer in the way of experience or opinion and, as a result, would not have thought about the munchies. T1D truly effects every part of the T1D's life.
Nicely said!
This is pretty spot on for my experiences too. An overall clean feeling without stagnation--bringing a great deal of balance to those earlier years of abuse!
How have you been with exercise and the lower carb veggies? I was having glycogen issues with recovery after workouts so decided to reintroduce some grain--SPARINGLY and also primarily sprouted.
There is considerable evidence that cannabinoids in marijuana actually prevent retinopathy, CKD and PN. Search it and read. Truly sorry you are experiencing all three. I have some of it too, but don't like smoking anymore, sadly, plus it is still illegal in my silly state.
you have the answer for that.
Here is an article discussing what earthling was talking about. Pretty convincing research. The compound that helps with retinopathy is different from the one that makes you high so a strain that helps you with your vision could be bred that could be used by those who don't like the getting high part. Hard to figure why this is not available to everyone.
I've never had a problem with it, truthfully. I'm lucky that my munchies food of choice is smartfood, which is relatively low in carbs and won't ruin my numbers if I miscount the carbs (or forget a few). Although I generally fall asleep before I hit the point of munchies, I'm ashamed to admit.
