Tanning w/ Omnipod?!?

Hey… don’t give me that look! I’m serious!

So, can I wear the Omnipod in a tanning booth?

Don’t you look at us with that one eye.

How warm does it get? If you can’t get in a hot tub … can you tan???

I only have a farmer’s tan. I don’t pay for that.

lol!!! one eye. fine! i guess i should find a new profile pic, then! lol

well… it’s hot enough to make you sweat. i just don’t know if… somehow… the “rays” or whatever, that come from the tanning bed… could ruin the pod i wear?

and no, i’m not a tanning-addict. i’m going to Hilton Head this summer. last summer, i went tanning for a couple of months before i went… so that i wouldn’t get a burn the first time i was there (i’m super duper white). and… last summer, i wasn’t diabetic. so, i didn’t deal with this.

I don’t think the heat will make the insulin go bad. Cause even though it’s hot your normal body temp should have a “cooling effect”.

On the mechanical side of a tanning bed----I don’t think it creates anything that should de-activate the pod. I have had an x-ray with one on and everything was fine.

There is one way to find out. Let us know what happens.

I wonder how your tan will look with a pod rotating around. Will it even out?

I always felt like my tan was ruined by my abdomen, marked up all over with red spots and small bruises from infusion sets and Symlin injections. I still try to get one though!

I live in Central Florida and have actually had insulin become less evective for me…after I left my prescription bag in my car for 30 minutes in an unshaded area. Oopps! I had no idea! I thought maybe I just got a bum vial, but was told by my endo’s office that exposure (direct and prolonged) to heat can effect the insulin in a negative way.

I don’t know what kind of insulin you’re on, but if you check the information that comes in the box it should tell you what kind of temperatures are okay for it. I’m not sure what this would do to the mechanism on the pod itself, however. I expect that the actual pod would be fine in the tanning booth. It’s the insulin’s integrity that I question.

Maybe you could take a tiny pump vacation for the duration of the tanning booth experience? Like, go on a day when you have to change it out anyhow and just take injections during the time you’re in it, then put a new pod on right after. That way you won’t end up with an odd white patch either. Hee.

yeah… i might just do that! like… go every three days… at the same time. and bolus before and after i change the pod.

Cannot help you here…I’ve been blessed with an eternal tan… At one time I owned a business that also had tanning beds; and one of of my customers asked me how effective my beds were. I told her that I used to look like her…so I guess pretty effective. She didn’t know what to say. The look on her face was priceless!

So, how is the tan coming along? Any pod problems?

i just got home from a vacation in ibiza, spain. most of which was spent on the beach. now i have a pod tan line!!! it’s actually pretty funny… maybe i can make a pattern? haha

I “tan” 3 times a week to help with a cancer problem. I’ve been on the pod since October. So far I’ve had no problems

I specifically asked my Omnipod rep about tanning because my wedding is coming up in 7 months and I don’t want to be pasty! She said the tanning is brief enough and the body’s cooling effect on the insulin (as someone else mentioned) is good enough that it is ok to tan with the pod. I do wonder about those lines though…haha

I feel sometimes you just have to what makes you happy! I am all about being the perfect diabetic but, one there is no perfect diabetic but, 2 sometimes you need to feel good doing something you want!

Cut out a a cute shape, star, rabbit and place it over the pod when you are in the tanning bed. That way it won’t be a ugly pod shape. Like a tanning tattoo.
