Today I want to share some encouraging personal news with all of you. First of all I finally found myself a proper diabetes clinic (since I ve been diagnosed last summer, I was sort of improvising with my GP and sometimes seeing a diabetes specialist who coincidentally is a friend of the family but not officially treating patients anymore)
I cant tell you what a difference it made for me today to walk into a proper diabetes care clinic for the first time where everybody knew what they were doing, asking the right questions and giving the right advice. All my questions were answered patiently by what seems to be a very good specialist as well as some great nurses, whatever issue I raised they were one step ahead of me helping with answers. This is the kind of care every pwd deserves!
Then the big surprise, (actually a little too good to be true since I ve seen some definitely higher numbers for the last 3 months than before, but who knows, maybe their machines are off a little or something, or I overestimated my highs), anyway, my A1c was tested and it came out 5.2!!
Best one so far, and the endo was particularly pleased because as he looked at a print out of my "curve" from my metre readings, he noticed that there werent ANY lows. ( I am going to brag and repeat what he said: "Sensational control".
Today is a good day. Today is a GREAT day. Only 9 months into this challenging new life, but right now I feel I got the D by the balls and I am convinced that had I not found this forum with all you wonderful people supporting one another, answering every little question of mine about pretty much anything diabetes related that came into my head I would not be feeling this way right now and a A1c to back up that feeling. I know it will get harder again, I know the numbers arent everything, but right now all I am is happy and positive and... whooohhoooooooooooooo!!
You guys rock! I rock! ;-)
You indeed do rock!! Congrats on the great A1C. Also on finding the great Diabetes care. I couldn't even imagine what it would be like having providers who were one step ahead of me, heck even ones who spoke the same language would be awesome!
Congrats on coming such a long way in a relatively short time!
Awesome. We’re proud of you. The important thing now that you’ve got it by the balls is to not let it play any larger role in your life than it has to. You rock, and diabetes can’t ever stop you.
With the uneven quality of care reported around here, from great to horrible, I think it is incumbent on all of us to be well informed about our condition. This way we can know if our care providers are giving us good care or not. tuD is the best place to gain this type of knowledge IMHO.
Congratulations on your success, you have a right to be proud of your accomplishment, we all know the hard work and attention to detail required to attain excellent H1C's.
Good for you! Wish I'd had access to a clinic like that early on. Congrats on those excellent numbers. There's nothing so motivating as positive results!
It's all too often that we must accept bad readings and just try to respond appropriately and move on. Celebrating the victories is just as important as persistent efforts! Congrats.
This is both such great news for you, but I am sure will give many people hope that they too can find such a great place. We all deserve it. Thanks for letting us know!
Great news! Stay positive!
I had 5.6 since Dx (13,9) but the positive effect of getting that OK result has disappeared very quickly. Like next day. After reading Bernstein ;). He thinks its too “darn” high.
And we have stupid system in Sweden called Mono, so the result came very good first like 4,7. I was happy for a while haha until I’ve converted it to other scale :).
It would be great if we could all tightly control our blood sugars to have an A1c of 4.8%. But we have diabetes and we will always hear different opinions. Bernstein saying you need your A1c < 5% and the ADA saying you need it at 7%. You need to establish your own scale. After all my years with Bernstein, my last A1c was 5.7%. I'm now officially pre-diabetic. But that is ok, because in my scale of things, that is really good.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch Julez! I’m in absolute awe - it’s taken me almost 20 years to get an A1C below 7%! If you have any day-to-day management tips I’d love to hear them!
