Update on my son

As I reported 6 weeks ago, my son was walking across a street on his college campus and was struck by a car that did not see him. He was transferred to where I live and has a broken left tibia on the inside and outside of his leg. By the grace of God the car didn't run completely over him. However, the top two inches of his tibia was crushed and he has been set in a brace that locks into place so the leg is immobile and bent where he can't walk on it.

We saw the ortho surgeon Wed. hoping for some good news. First, the doctor took all his pain medications away which was not a very good idea as he is very stiff in the mornings. Second, the xrays show that there is no progress what so ever. Now we are really cutting into summer. He goes back in two weeks for another cat scan and sees the ortho surgeon the middle of July.

I am trying to see how it is possible he can return to school in the fall. He was at the end of his Junior year at Texas State University and couldn't finish the last 3 weeks of school. However, I took the fight up with the Dean after one teacher wouldn't cooperate and just give my son his grades instead of an incomplete. His 4.0 average was blown but he got his grades two weeks ago and was a 3.75. His last two advanced draft drawings I mailed to his teacher holding out. She gave him a B because his work was late! Cold! I also got over $400 back in his meal ticket that was said to be impossible to get back.

We both are frustrated and he is at an angry point not being able to work fulltime this summer to raise money for tuition. He was on scholarship last year and this year will be different. Please take time and just think how lucky you are if you have family, children, etc. This happened so swift and it has set in that I easily could have lost my child. I have already lost one and don't wish it upon anyone. Make this a grateful moment to make a point to tell your loved ones that you care and be generous with hugs. We are just devastated.

I’m so sorry for you and your son’s suffering. Why do some of these professors get off on using their little bit of power to be jerks instead of human beings. Give a little person a little power and that is what you get… Tell him to try to keep things in perspective, and take it one day at a time, his health is more important than school for this minute.

I am sorry to hear this happened! But on the positive, he is alive to fight for!!! and his leg is still attached!

Yes, we have both gone thru this stage of gratitude and we truly are grateful. It’s just been really hard to deal with all it involved with him being a fulltime college student that HAD a summer job he can’t work now. There are a lot praying for him but wondering the outcome of this.

Judith sorry to hear all that is going on but he’s still with us! My dad has fought off 2 types of cancer with chemo and now they’ve stopped it and got hospice to take care of him in his final days! Too True when you have family love them while you have them!

I remember the look on my dad’s face when the doctor told him they were not going to do chemo and radiation anymore after 9 months. We ended up having to use Hospice for him and then my mom again 6 years later when her breast cancer came back. I am so sorry about your dad. I am enjoying the weekend with him gone. I haven’t heard from him so the feeling must be mutual.

Was wondering how he was doing. Haven’t heard from you in a while. Oh honey, sorry to hear things haven’t improved.

My husband’s a college professor. Grades can be appealed & certainly there’s a justification for this one. A perfect 4.0. Know that hurts after all his hard work. What an ■■■! My husband has had many students with medical emergencies. He’s never hesitated to give incompletes.

That 4.0 seems like a lot of pressure with everything going on. Sounds like he needs some good rehab. And Motrin is a good over the counter for muscle pain.
