I was never a believer in over-the-counter vitamins and supplements but I am a believer now. The first thing my endocrinologist did was put me on a multiple vitamin, calcium + D, and aspirin 81. Energy better. When he diagnosed neuropathy he did a B12 level. My B12 was non-existant, so I started monthly B12 shots. It actually helped both my feet and hands. My cholesterol was good but my “other” cholesterol numbers weren’t (the good, the bad and the ugly) so he started me on Niacin x2 a day - within a month no problems. My liver numbers weren’t good so my gastro doctor added Vit C, Vit E, Omega Fish Oil and Milk Thistle. I have acid reflux and gastroparesis. Yikes. That’s a lot. But my labs are all ok now. I feel better. Every time they added something the dr or nurse explained exactly what it was correcting, what it would help. When I feel a cold coming I reach for the zinc and double my Vit C. My doctors believe in the value of all this and I do, too.
What hurts is that my insurance is awesome and covers everything EXCEPT over-the-counter stuff. I use online Puritan’s Pride and get a good deal and it costs around $25 a month. Is it worth it? I think so. My husband tells me I’m worth every penny. lol
I took that WebMD test and it said the same thing - multiple vitamins, fish oil, and some kind of diabetic pkt??? Well, I’m already on the multiple vit and fish oil. Couldn’t connect to see what the diabetic pkt contained so I don’t know what the match would be there. I like that all my pills go through the doctors. I don’t want to pay for or bother with what isn’t right for me.
Multivit w/ no iron, D3 4000 mg/d, Magnesium 400 mg/d, Beta Carotene 25,000 IU/d, Vit E 800 IU/d, Co Q10 100 mg/d, Ginkgo Biloba 120mg/d. Use Ginkgo to thin my blood vs aspirin. Bilberry 1000 mg/d. Not religious about it…but, do take these most of the time. Also take fish oil a few times a week and Alpha Lipoic Acid 100mg/d.
It helped indeed, I should ask my doctor about the vitamins. Also it is good to know that the test gave same results for you, which make me think it is a standard that the application will suggest these three if you have diabetes!? May be am wrong! Who knows…?
I take calcium, magnesium, D3, Vit E, fish oil caps, Vit B complex, zinc & copper.
Caveat:
Vit B’s in doses higher than 50 mg daily isn’t good for people with diabetes & can cause neuropathies.
Vit C effects meter readings by giving falsely lowered results, unless in extremely low doses. Vit C reacts with test strips.
I wouldn’t trust a survey geared to sell vitamins.
(50 mgs because higher doses aren’t good for people with diabetes).
Would you please give me a link or two to info about diabetes and higher doses of vitamin B? I’ve only seen recommendations that people with diabetes be sure to take B vitamins. As a vegetarian, I’ve taken B-complex supplements for years, long before my diabetes diagnosis. I’d really like to learn more.
I first read about Vit B doses in Dr. Bernstein’s book Diabetes Solution & the recommendation to keep doses not above 50 mg daily. B12 is fine. I’m assuming that’s your concern as a vegetarian.
I did some research for another discussion here about vitamins & also found this. Sorry, I didn’t copy the link at the time.
B6 over 200 mg raises BG & impairs nerve function (so does excess Vit C supplementation)
B3 (niacin) over 200 mg can raise BG
B1 over 200 mg can inactivate insulin.
I take 1 Insulow (slow absorbing Alpha Lipoic Acid with Biotine) with high carb meals (>60g) – I haven’t yet noticed a different in my BGs though. (Dr. Bernstein recommends this.)
I take one 50mg Benfotiamine (fat soluble B1) once per week.
I’m an old guy (64) so I take Centrum Silver. I have had good luck with that. I also take several supplements. One is Lutein 20mg, I started taking this when I was diagnosed with borderline Glaucoma. Since I started taking this my eyesight has improved. I also take CO Q-10 100mg, this is a Cardiovascular Antioxidant. I still play sports and try to remain active so I have taken Glucosamine Chondroitin which is for joint health. I notice you take fish oil, I take that also. I usually have good check up’s and I really don’t get tired, I seem to have a good energy level.
Judith in Portland…I am 64 and have taken Glucosamine Chondroitin for several years. I took it long before I was diagnosed as being diabetic. I have told my doctor that I am taking it and he hasn’t told me to stop. I can’t tell that it has hurt my sugar readings. In fact I think if I were not taking it I would probably be less active now and that would impact my readings.
I would recommend it to anyone. I have given a few pills to several people who have complained about joint pain. I think it has helped almost all of them. I still play softball and basketball and I credit Glucosamine for my longevity. My mother in law has tried it and it has not worked for her. She has no cartilage left in her knee. You need to have cartilage for the Glucosamine to work on.
I take it as well and no I have not noticed it affecting BS at all. Getting a good brand makes a huge difference, mine are organic and they are the only ones I use now. You pay more but it’s so worth it, With no regulations, you want to know what your buying and putting into your body. Hope this is helpful. L
