What is your forbidden food Item?

Everything! I have gastroparesis so that causes all kinds of problems. I used to eat salads everyday and can’t now. I can have them once in awhile but not every day like I used to – that is probably the thing that I miss the most.

I also have problems with gluten so having a piece of cake causes problems. .

Although I will indulge in something good once in awhile, with the gastroparesis, my BS is usually screwed up even the following day – I don’t do it very often for that reason.

legumes

Any kind of grain in any form, potatoes, fruit, beans. I can actually have a little as long as its just a bite. I find this easy to do with beans, I can add a few bites worth to chili for instance with no problem. Since it’s mixed in it’s easy to keep from overdoing it. At the company BBQ last year I had a little potato salad to go with my brisket, no spike.

So far in 1.5 years of low carbing I have avoided any major binges. I guess if it ever happens it’ll probably be mexican, I used to have green chili stew at least once a week. I tried making some substituting turnips for the potatoes but it just wasn’t the same.

Rice is my number one forbidden food. Fruit juices aren’t much better although I will drink some for a low.

pasta, rice, potatoes of any shape or form.

Hard candy definitely makes sense…in fact, as a kid I was told to use Jolly Ranchers as a way of treating lows. They really bring you up, and they do it fast!

I have found that in Italian restaurants it helps to go with someone who loves pasta. Get something like chicken parmesan - but request that your chicken be grilled, not breaded, and let your dining partner eat the pasta while you eat the chicken. Have a salad with it and you’re good to go!

Also, Olive Garden has a few friendly items (there’s one I love with salmon and asparagus, can’t remember just what it is now).

I looked it up; Olive Garden has Herb-Grilled Salmon, which is served with broccoli. Or there’s Venetian Apricot Chicken, served with broccoli and asparagus. If the apricot sauce is too carby, request it on the side or without. I usually get one of these dishes when I go and let others indulge in the never-ending pasta madness!

I know chocolate spikes my BS so once a month a buy one dark choc Dove bar which satisfies me and it is no longer a problem.

Lentil Soup. It’s so weird.

Jasmine Rice
Pizza
Mexican food
French Bread
are the worst, and i miss the most. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. the way I work them in is by having them en route to strenuous exercise.

best surprise - Popcorn doesn’t seem to spike me at all.

Thai food is the worst. I’m running over 300 for hours after I eat it. It’s just not worth it. Same for Chinese food unless I get everything steamed and avoid rice and any type of sauce. Bagels and cream cheese…forget it. Basically, anything high in fat is a no go for me. I spike more on high-fat foods than I do on straight sugar!

Hahaha! Definitely, definitely egg rolls of any variety. I don’t think I really ‘manage’ following the delicious egg roll intake - I just keep checking my blood sugar and take an extra bolus or two to make up for the high blood sugar that follows 9 times out of 10.

I don’t do it too often…but sometimes at work the siren call of not having to cook and being able to pick up something fast and tasty calls to me…aaaaand then I spend the rest of the night remembering why I didn’t do it to begin with.

hard dough bread!
Chewy sweets
Smoothies!

For bread I have tortillas, for potatoes I have sweet potatoes, for chocolate I have sugar free…but there is nothing for Cheetos…That is the last of the forbidden foods I have not conquered…I get defeated everytime! I try to restrategize my next attack but nothing seems to work…I just cant get my hand and mouth to understand portion control when it comes to Cheetos…

Have you tried the Cheerios multi-grain…I found they do not spike like all of the other cereals do

Have you tried doing an experiment to see if it’s high-fat high-carb that spikes you, or just high-fat?

E.g. try bagels and cream cheese one day, and just cream cheese the next day.

Pizza, chinese food, cereal. Basically the 3 food groups of a college student. Chinese food ESPECIALLY. Seems like no matter how much I bolus I always end up 200+ afterwards.

Doesn’t make them forbidden for me… just an occasional treat on the condition that I go run later or something. I guess I’ll have to stick to the fourth food group, Ramen noodles.

Anything that tastes good.

(Just kidding…kinda…)

I will avoid:

sugar = sugar in any form, sweets and honey, except for lows and for the taste of some cooking receipts

pretzel, zwieback and white bread = spike hell

real coke = not to catch with insulin

food without carbs = now you laugh! Right? Well, I am not a fan of TAGing because it it just more work for someone on MDI. Thus I always combine carbs with food that needs to be TAGed for. I will combine a sausage with potatoes to cover both with one shot. For me even short acting analog insulin like NovoLog have a tail and this tail covers the stuff you normally would need to TAG for. For example I can manage to cover a small pizza with one shot - despite the fat. For bigger pizzas I need two shots or one shot with some additional physical activity. This small tail is one of the mysteries here because it is active for hours it seems. It is just a small additional amount of insulin like a little basal on top. What ever, I am just glad it works that way.

bread from the baker = my bread maker (Panasonic SD-257) is very important, different bakers will make their breads very differently, it may even depend on the person that is in charge, this lottery ended with making my own bread.
