I may be getting the G4 dexcom cgm… What should I do with my old one? Are there any places to recycle them? My current dexcom doesn’t work anymore and isn’t remotely accurate anymore. I also have left over sensors etc. is there a place to donate or recycle? I can imagine some less fortunate people could possibly utilize these sensors. Although, I’m sure somehow the govt or AMA made it illegal to donate perfectly good and sealed like new equipment. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
Great Question Kaayle.
In light of the recent release of the G4, this question has been posed several times (in different iterations).
The TuD Administration Team would like to remind everyone that the exchange, sale or giveaway of items between members that require a prescription from a licensed practitioner (such as a doctor, dentist, ophthalmologist or optometrist) is not allowed on TuDiabetes.
Such items include, but are not limited to: insulin, insulin pumps, insulin pump supplies (infusion sets, reservoirs, inserters), continuous glucose monitors, CGM sensors, glucagon, Metformin, Byetta, Symlin, statins.
Things you are welcome to exchange, sell or give away on TuDiabetes include: glucometers, glucose test strips, lancets, ketone test strips, glucose (tablets, gel, etc.).
We encourage you to donate supplies to non-profits such as the Charles Ray III Diabetes Association, which accepts unexpired glucometers and insulin pump supplies, or Insulin For Life USA which accepts donated insulin, glucose test strips, ketone test strips and unused Meters. These groups have existing protocols for handling these items and how they need to be sent to people who need them.
Contacting one of these organizations, or perhaps a local support group in your area, might be the best method for donating the sensors.
Please refer to the TuDiabetes Terms of Use for more information.
For individuals replying to this thread or for individuals posting new discussions, please be mindful that any posts that are viewed as requesting or selling prescription items (which includes not only the device but also the sensors) will be removed (per our Terms of Service), and abuse of this policy may result in removal from the site.
Thank you for kindly adhering to the site's policies,
TuDiabetes Administration Team
Hi Kaayle,
I suggest you ask your endo if s/he knows anyone that could use the sensors. When I switched over to the G4, I had a full box of Seven+ sensors. My endo is connected to a clinical trial research center and they were thrilled to have them!
Good luck!
Great idea… Spoke to them already, but if there are more charities like the tudiabetes group just mentioned, would rather just find out options. Thanks so much for the reply… Just trying to do the right thing. :).
Nope, just trying to find out more options not give away or sell… Want to find out options. Thanks for the update.
I tried to donate my old sensors but never got a response. I gave them to a friend who took them to his endo. Don't know if he found a donation possibility or not.
I am expecting my Dex4 this coming week (can't wait) Anyway, I asked my Dexcom rep about what to do with the old sensors (I have one box) and receiver etc. She said that while Dexcom does not take them back for appropriate recycling, she ahs indigent patients who would love it. So I am sending my seven+ supplies to her.
I am crossing my fingers that people do donate to their Endo so people like me can get the supplies when need (insurance does not cover them). I am on Disability and supplies are so very expensive.
I've successfully sold cgm sensors in the past on eBay, but recently they've cracked down on it and taken my listing down. Kinda lame since I'm actually helping people in the world and also selling them at a much reduced price; a product that would otherwise just be thrown out. A CGM is not like medication where you can OD or hurt yourself using it incorrectly so I personally think it should be totally allowed. So I'm in the same boat as you, just trying to even donate it to someone with diabetes that needs it. Let me know if you figure anything out! Meanwhile I'm trying to contact a guy in russia I sold them to previously.
