Hi all.
After 8 years on the Medtronic pump, I switched to Omnipod yesterday via the Cut the Cord Promotion, which makes it pretty inexpensive to try. So far, I’m a fan.
One question, though… I put the pod on at 7am yesterday, which means it will expire at 7am Sunday. Sunday is typically is a sleep-in day for me.
Does this mean it’s going to stop working/start beeping at 7am and force me to change it?
If so, I’ll probably change tomorrow evening, cuz I like my sleep.
You control when it will start beeping at you to warn you of the impending 72-hour mark. I’ve got mine set to an hour, I think. But then it will beep at you every hour for the next 8 hours, at which point you’ll get the death whine if you haven’t already disconnected the pod. I find that if I’m in a deep sleep, I don’t hear the pod beeps, but I will hear the PDA beeps - however, the PDA won’t know it’s time to change until it communicates with the pod and if you keep your pod and PDA far enough away, no comm.
On the other hand, you could change it out Saturday night and avoid that all-together. But lots of people will tell you not to change at night in case it doesn’t work and you get no insulin all night. I’ve never had this issue, though.
Thanks! Exactly what I needed to know.

Kimberly,
Just to clarify, you can set it to give you the warning beep at any time, but regardless of how much time you give it, does it just die at the 72 hour mark or can it go longer?
You can set an “expiration” alert from 1-24 hours before the actual 72-hour expiration. Once it hits the 72-hour point, it will beep every hour for the next 8 hours (if you leave it activated). After 8 hours, it will deactivate itself and you will have to start a new pod. Lots of folks use the extra 8 hours - you can still bolus and receive basal, you just get an hourly reminder that your 72 hours are up.
Ahh, thanks!!!
I have slept in on a weekend morning multiple times after the 8 hour grace period has started. I never hear the hourly reminder beeps, and I am not THAT heavy a sleeper. I do hear the final long beep that signifies the pod is deactivating however. Luckily hehe. That one would be bad to miss!
