First a1c since diagnosis

Diagnosed in April 2016 with a1c of 12.8. Went in for my much anticipated follow up and a1c was 5.6.!!! I told a few people who were happy but I don’t think they understand how it feels and knew you all KNOW . So I had to share and it made me tear up a little. Just because as a newbie and the rollercoaster of diagnosis and how hard D is…I felt good and I’m motivated to keep fighting. Thanks for listening.

Hey Tim. I’m thinking I must still have some insulin production. I’m not sure though as the only time that was tested was at diagnosis.

Hi there. Because I’m lazy and the whole thing was slightly overwhelming…I try to stick to the same kinds of foods during the work week and try to go low carb. The weekends are a little less structured. I also came back to my passion…soccer…but only to coach my daughter’s traveling team. I can say I have been more mindful and active since diagnosis. Like I’m trying to prove the universe wrong or something. Haha.

Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone. Made me wake up smile.

Finally, laziness pays off! Keep slacking! :relieved:

Hey J. You should be very proud of your recent a1c too. =) I don’t try to base my success on the a1c but it feels good to know I’m doing my body a favor. And to not have the 12.8 in my head anymore which was important for my mental health. Congrats to you too my friend on your recent success after diagnosis as well.

Congrats. Bet you’re feeling better, too.

Congrats! I am always impressed by levels under 7. It seems at my worst I am never over 8.5 and at my very best, 7, so I can’t understand how people achieve those rates without eating the same thing every day!

Yeah . . . that’s pretty much how I do it. Not by eating the precise same thing every day, but rotating between menus that are all pretty rigidly designed according to the same parameters (so much carb, so much protein, etc.). Same basic idea.

Wow, you’re really doing it! I’d like to keep my A1C in the 5 range (I’m 5.2, newly diagnosed). I actually think your A1C is as good an indication of health as your cholesterol readings are. So congrats!

LOL. Well, I expect you didn’t realize it, but you opened something of a can of worms when you mentioned cholesterol. The traditional wisdom about that is coming under increasing scrutiny these days. If the subject interests you, a great place to begin is Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes.

Thank you! Upon diagnosis though my levels for cholesterol were high. So I have a complete CBC coming up in October. I’m hoping those are down as well. If they aren’t down I’ll have to go on a statin. Which is weird since I’m not overweight. But I don’t eat the same thing everyday. I switch foods and pack my lunch. But went out to lunch today as a treat so not everyday is the same. I’m sure it helps too that I’m newly diagnosed. Meaning im still in the honeymoon stage requiring little insulin and wake up in the 80s or 90s in the AM.

Love the soccer ball. I got back into it after dx.
