Urinating a lot during the night

I did see my GP the last time this happened a few weeks back. And we ran some blood work and urine test and they all came back clean. Because it wasn’t consistently happening, he told me to just monitor it.
I even told my endo last time when I saw her, and she didn’t think it was anything to worry about.
Hence why I wanted to find out whether other people experience this because it doesn’t feel very normal. I guess not by the sounds of it.

I was gonna guess UTI, too.

I feel like men don’t always notice when they have a UTI.
Women get them more frequently. .Years ago my endo told me to stop taking baths. She wanted me to take showers instead and that helped eliminate them almost entirely.

Periods of high BG can bring these on. During which time, those minor infections can really take hold. It just requires a urine test in the clinic and an Rx for antibiotics.

I see, now, that you already had this checked. Bummer. I didn’t read to the bottom of the post. Oh well, I’ll leave it here incase someone else is googling.

How about this one…

Kidney stones or stones in the ureter (the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder) can cause pain in the lower back . This pain may also radiate to the groin and is often accompanied by painful or frequent urination . An infection in the kidney can also cause back pain and frequent urination .

I agree with others to continue following up with your medical team. Just to throw another possibility out there to discuss with your doctor, frequent urination specifically at night can be a symptom of untreated sleep apnea.

That is the one I had a couple of months ago along with a blocked bile duct. My GP and local lab ran all the blood and urine and ultrasound tests and everything came back normal and urine flowing normally. I knew I had a problem so since I am on Medicare, went directly to see a urologist in Boston (no referral required) who had me go through a contrast CT Scan which immediately was showing an 11 mm kidney stone imbedded in my ureter which urine had found a way to bypass and a blocked bile duct. My kidney stone was blasted with a laser and the pieces removed followed by ERCP to take care of the bile duct issue. This was also important to make sure my bile duct issue was not a cancerous tumor in progress. What was interesting was that I was totally unaware of my kidney stone which had obviously been stuck in my ureter for quite a while and did not give me any pain.

I am really happy that I did not rely on my GP and local lab for this one.

What symptoms did you have for this that got you worried?

I started to pee more at night as I normally do not pee between bedtime and 4AM. Additionally, I had done a lot of bending and heavy lifting in the warehouse for three days (about 5000-6000 lbs/day), which as an executive is not a normal activity for me but everyone pitched in due to lack of locally available staff and I started peeing some blood from time to time but had no pain at all and the blood would stop when I stopped helping out in the warehouse.

I’m glad you got to the bottom of it! Did the increase frequency of peeing stop at any time before your procedure?

No, but it was not horrendous either. Instead of going all night with no need to pee, I would have to get up twice so was not too bad but not normal either. After procedures, everything is back to normal.

The other thing that is sort of T1D-related to rule out is thyroid disease (specifically hyperthyroidism). I’m guessing you get checked for that as most of us do (and should) regularly, but in case you haven’t in a while, would ask for those levels to be run.

I do have hyperthyroid, but I’ve never associated an overactive bladder. Interesting. Now it looks I have a double whammy that could be causing this. Perhaps this is why my GP dismissed it as anything to worry about.

Kidney stones usually cause pain when the urine flow is blocked. When urine flows around it it generally won’t hurt.
Why you needed to get up and pee at night is a mystery unless the stone was causing a sensation that mimicked having to pee.
Good thing you found it

I bet that’s it! Maybe a sign to double check that your thyroid levels haven’t gotten further off, if it’s been awhile? But yeah, I suspect it’s probably more related to that than the diabetes given your tight control.

I only checked my thyroids two weeks ago and it was normal. My Hb1AC is normal too and has been the best it’s ever been too since being on CGMS.

I had a period where my thyroid was out of wack, like really off the charts, but i didn’t experience these frequent urination at the time. So it’s weird and perhaps its something else. But these episodes have been common for me over the years, it comes for a day or two and then disappears.

I’m going to see another endo later this week, I’ll see whether he can add something. Thanks for your help.

Have you had a change in any other medication you take? I recently spent nine days in the ICU with something similar to you which as it got worse was down to a concentration of another drug I take affecting my kidneys. It resulted in back pain and frequent nighttime urination before the toxicity levels put me in hospital.

I’ve been seeing my nephrologist recently about this. Usually I’m up three time in the night starting around 3AM. He thinks it is my body mobilizing fluid I’ve sequestered during the day as I have some lower extremity edema due to long hours standing. He suggested compression stockings which I’ve used with reasonable results but I hate the feeling during the day more than I hate getting up a few times at night. My glucose control is pretty good with only a rare excursion over 180. It clearly is NOT related to my BS control as my numbers have never been better!

Do you drink a lot of coffee as it dehydrates you.

No no change

No don’t drink coffee either.

I’ll have to get this checked out. The frequent urination has stopped a few days ago but I’m sure it will come back later based on past patterns

So annoying isn’t it? Have you had your sodium checked? If low could be SIADH. Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretc hormone. Could be an adrenal problem. May need to talk to a kidney specialist. Best of luck.

Yes, coffee will cause you to urinate more. No, it does not dehydrate you. The amount of water you expel from drinking coffee is less than the amount of water you consume when you drink it.

Net effect, hydration, in most cases. I suppose if you like your coffee really, really, really, really strong that might not be the case. :man_shrugging:

I have SIADH and never had peeing as a symptom.
